Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pumps

Move liquids, chemicals, slurries and solids-laden fluids with a pump built for demanding industrial service. York Fluid Controls supplies air operated double diaphragm pumps for applications ranging from general fluid transfer and dewatering to chemical processing, mining, food processing, and wastewater handling.

Our pump specialists can help you match flow, pressure, fluid compatibility, solids handling and operating conditions to the right AODD pump configuration.

What Is an Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pump?

An air operated double diaphragm pump, or AODD pump, is a positive displacement pump powered by compressed air. Two flexible diaphragms move back and forth to draw fluid into the pump and discharge it under pressure.

AODD pumps are widely used for fluid transfer because they can handle a broad range of liquids, including viscous fluids, chemicals, slurries and fluids containing suspended solids.

How AODD Pumps Work

Compressed air enters the pump’s air distribution system, pushing one diaphragm away from the centre section. That movement forces fluid from one chamber through the discharge check valve.

At the same time, the connecting shaft pulls the opposite diaphragm inward. The resulting suction draws fluid into the second chamber through the inlet check valve.

The air valve then redirects compressed air to the opposite side, reversing the process. This alternating diaphragm movement creates a continuous pumping cycle without requiring an electric motor at the pump.

Flow can typically be adjusted by controlling the air supply, giving operators a practical way to adapt pump output to changing process requirements.

Key Benefits of Diaphragm Pumps

AODD technology combines flexible fluid handling with relatively simple operation. Important advantages include:

  • Self-priming performance: AODD pumps can lift fluid into the pump without requiring a continuously flooded suction.
  • Solids handling: Appropriate ball- or flap-valve designs can pass suspended solids and debris that may create problems for other pump technologies.
  • Dry-running capability: Many AODD pumps can operate dry intermittently without the immediate mechanical damage associated with some other pump types.
  • Variable flow: Pumping rate can be controlled through the compressed-air supply.
  • Broad material compatibility: Metallic and non-metallic pump bodies, diaphragms, valve components and elastomers are available for different fluids.
  • No electric motor at the pump: Pneumatic operation can be advantageous where electrical equipment is undesirable or where site conditions require specialized equipment selection.
  • Portable configurations: AODD pumps are commonly used for temporary transfer, sump, maintenance and mobile pumping duties.

These characteristics allow one pump technology to solve a wide range of fluid-transfer challenges.

Diaphragm Pump Applications by Industry

AODD pumps are used wherever fluid properties or changing operating conditions make conventional pumping difficult.

  • Chemical processing: Transfer acids, caustics, solvents and other process chemicals using compatible wetted materials and elastomers.
  • Mining and mineral processing: Move mine water, slurries, process liquids and solids-laden fluids in demanding environments.
  • Paints and coatings: Handle pigments, inks, coatings and other products where viscosity and solids content must be considered.
  • Food, beverage and pharmaceutical processing: Purpose-built hygienic and material-compliant configurations are available for applications with additional cleanliness requirements.
  • Municipal and wastewater: Pump sludge, wastewater, sump contents and fluids containing suspended solids.
  • General manufacturing: Use diaphragm pumps for tank transfer, unloading, circulation, machine sumps and other plant utility duties.

Diaphragm Pump Brands We Stock

York Fluid Controls supplies AODD pump solutions from established manufacturers, including SANDPIPER, Versa-Matic -put VM first

Available configurations include metallic and non-metallic pumps, standard-duty models, heavy-duty solids-handling pumps, high-pressure designs and application-specific configurations.

Because pump construction has a direct effect on reliability and service life, brand and model selection should be based on the application rather than port size alone.

How to Select the Right AODD Pump

Correct pump selection starts with understanding what the pump must move and how the system operates.

Important considerations include:

  • Required flow rate
  • Total discharge pressure or head
  • Suction conditions and lift
  • Fluid viscosity
  • Specific gravity
  • Maximum solids size and concentration
  • Abrasiveness
  • Fluid temperature
  • Chemical compatibility
  • Available compressed-air pressure and volume
  • Required connection size and type
  • Installation environment

Wetted materials and elastomers are especially important when pumping aggressive chemicals or abrasive products. An incompatible diaphragm, seal or pump body can shorten service life even when the pump otherwise meets the required flow and pressure.

York Fluid Controls can review these operating conditions and help identify an appropriate diaphragm pump and material configuration.

Diaphragm Pump Repair, Parts and Service

AODD pumps are mechanically straightforward, but diaphragms, check valves, air-valve components and other wear parts still require periodic inspection and replacement.

York Fluid Controls provides pump inspection, maintenance, overhaul and repair services, with both in-house and on-site service options available depending on the requirement.

We also supply replacement and aftermarket parts for AODD pumps. Access to the correct components can help restore pump performance, reduce unnecessary equipment replacement and limit production downtime.

Preventive attention to the air supply also matters. Clean, properly regulated compressed air helps protect air-valve components and allows the pump to operate at the pressure required by the application rather than continuously running at maximum air pressure.

Serving Ontario and the GTA

York Fluid Controls is based in Brampton, Ontario, with a full sales and service facility supporting industrial fluid-handling requirements.

We work with customers throughout the GTA and Ontario across chemical processing, mining, manufacturing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, municipal, utility and other industrial sectors.

Whether you are replacing an existing AODD pump, troubleshooting a difficult application or specifying equipment for a new system, our team can help evaluate the operating conditions before equipment is selected.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does AODD stand for?

AODD stands for air operated double diaphragm. An AODD pump uses compressed air to move two diaphragms back and forth, creating alternating suction and discharge strokes.

Many air operated double diaphragm pumps can tolerate intermittent dry running without damage. Operating limits still depend on the specific pump, fluid and application, so manufacturer recommendations should always be followed.

Yes. Many AODD pumps are designed to handle suspended solids. The maximum solids size depends on the pump’s port size, internal flow path and check-valve design. Heavy-duty flap-valve pumps are available for particularly challenging solids-handling applications.

Yes. AODD pumps are self-priming and can be used in suction-lift applications when properly sized and installed. Actual suction capability depends on factors such as pump model, fluid properties and installation conditions.

Depending on the manufacturer and model, pump bodies may be available in materials such as aluminum, cast iron, stainless steel, polypropylene or PVDF. Diaphragm and valve materials are also available in multiple elastomers and thermoplastics to suit different fluids.

Start with the required flow and pressure, then consider viscosity, solids content, chemical compatibility, temperature, suction conditions and available compressed air. Providing this information to a pump specialist helps narrow the selection to pumps that can meet both hydraulic and material requirements.
